For my first job, in 2015, I was a camp counselor and soccer coach for Friends Academy Summer Camp. For this job I helped coach kids from the age of 7-13. This was a valuable job for me, as it taught me the essentials for working with the other counselors and group leaders as a team around a camp environment. I also gained experience with talking to parents who had certain requests for their children, or even just wanted to know how their child was doing. Overall, it helped me become a better communicator and helped me develop a strong working mentality.

For my second job, in the summer of 2016, I worked as a member of the maintenance crew for Shibley Day Camp. The maintenance crew consisted of myself along with 4 other members, all of which worked full time for Shibley Day Camp and were in their 30’s to 40’s. This was cool to me because they all had a ton of maintenance experience and were more than willing to take me under their wing and teach me. Through this job, I learned valuable skills such as how to weed wack, leaf blow, sledge hammer, change tires, build objects and furniture, fix sports equipment, clean pools, paint roofs and walls, and much more. Most importantly, I gained more experience with communication and working as a team to get tough tasks completed in a short time frame. On a daily basis our crew would have to do whatever was needed to keep the camp functioning at a high level. We were in constant communication through walkie-talkies, and had to always be on our toes in case of any emergency situation that needed to be handled. The director of the camp even called us the “backbone” of the camp. Personally, I also was in charge of security during dismissal time, so I was in constant communication with the directors of the camp during this time. I worked 5 days a week from 7am-4pm with a one hour long lunch break in the middle of the day. It was long hours and real tough work. Each day was quite exhausting, but I loved this job and I feel as though I gained so much valuable experience through it.
